Pittsburgh Permaculture

This beautiful garden is in the front yard of a home in Finleyville, PA. The entire front (and back yard) slopes downhill. The soil being very clayey and unforgiving to digging swales, we designed fingers of huglekulture beds built up from the soil. These huglekulture beds help to stop and slow water moving downhill and store water in the ground. They were planned and planted with dyeing plants in mind. Not shown here are five more fingers of huglekulture beds perpendicular to the hillside all working together to stop and slow water while providing a beautiful growing medium for perennial flowers, fruit trees and nitrogen fixing plants.
