Mission
The mission of Pgh Food Forests is to create food forests in Pittsburgh that engage residents in community-building projects, provide nutritious food and create green spaces.
Vision
Our vision is to create places of sanctuary throughout the city of Pittsburgh that provide healthy food, and inspire a care for the earth.

The food forest model involves three or more layers of fruit growth and is more permanent than an annual based food system. These plantings include canopy trees such as pear, bush/shrub layer such as blueberries and understory species or more traditional annual crops and perennial herbs.
Our first project is the Hazelwood Food Forest. Hazelwood is a good location for the planting of a food forest because of it’s many vacant lots and lack of available fresh food. Eventually we hope to be able to plant food forests in neighborhoods throughout the city.
