Yesterday Pittsburgh City Council passed a new rule for urban agriculture in the city which includes the following:

-The keeping of up to 3 chickens with 2,000 sq. ft or more of land (this includes the footprint of the home)
-Housing of 2 beehives with 2,000 sq. ft or more of land and a minimum 10 feet from a neighboring property line
-On-site sale of produce grown on vacant land with permission from the owner

What are you most excited about and do you have any new plans as a result?

So exciting!! I wish I could have chickens in my apt. If anyone starts keeping chickens and wants to go in on up to 3, let me know! I probably would only need 1, but as I said I have no space. :)

Hey Troy,

Definitely gets my brain spinning for when I actually have some land to use - hopefully within the next year or so!

On the topic of urban farming, I have some friends involved in a Sustainability class at Pitt will be doing a group project on urban agriculture policy that may be actually get drafted - yinz should talk!

I am glad you are here on the forums, I hope they will be a good place for continuous discussion. Do you know any of the specifics around the urban ag policy your friends will be working on?

i think this will be good for organizations like Grow Pittsburgh. there's a lot of vacant lots that can be put to better use because of the 'with permission' thing. the bee-keeping and chicken-raising are cool, but i suspect few people will opt-in.

...i'm glad for other people, even though i won't be taking direct advantage of any of these things myself. i have my own half acre, and not enough time to fully utilize it.
