does anybody have any time-tested methods of season extension for the spring, I may try to get some veggies out earlier than normal and was looking for ideas.

good question. Dillner Farms uses hoop houses and hay mulch quite effectively, which are temporary plastic domes over their young plants. ...i bet it wouldn't be very hard to build a small scale one for a few raised beds. you can see pictures of it on their site here:
